Earlier this year, it was announced that Owen is to depart the soap temporarily in the summer, allowing him to spend time concentrating on charity work and other projects.
The actor's screen wife Patsy Palmer (Bianca Butcher) is also currently out of contract with EastEnders and focusing on motherhood following the arrival of her fourth child Bertie in December.
Speaking of his forthcoming departure, Owen told Inside Soap: "When I returned to the show, it was only meant to be for six months. Three and a half years later, I'm still here so I just wanted to take a break. I'm having 12 months off and leave in July. But if Patsy comes back - which I'm sure she will - I'll be happy to return."
Asked what the news means for the rest of the family, he replied: "Ricky will run into troubles as he's skint and has kids to provide for. But Carol and Pat will hold the fort."
Owen is currently working with the charity Drop 4 Drop, which helps to tackle the global water crisis in the developing world. He recently paid a visit to India for a week and helped to install wells in communities which did not have access to clean drinking water.

Discussing how he will spend his time away from Albert Square, the star said: "I'll be heading back to India. I'll be making documentaries and also working on my autobiography. I've had such an incredible life, so I think it'll be a good read."
Meanwhile, Palmer recently reaffirmed her commitment to returning to EastEnders "when the time is right".
