'EastEnders' Darren could pop back one day, says Charlie G. Hawkins

By
EastEnders star Charlie G Hawkins has said that he is glad his character Darren Miller will still have a link to Albert Square following his departure.

Darren makes the difficult decision to leave Walford next week, realising that he needs a fresh start after cheating on fiancé Jodie Gold (Kylie Babbington) and stealing from the car lot.

Hawkins announced that he was bowing out from EastEnders earlier this year, but Darren's young son George is remaining in the Square with mum Heather.

"That was quite nice for me, because I didn't want to destroy all my links to the Square," Hawkins explained on This Morning today. "I currently don't have any family on there, so it was nice to know that there's someone back on the Square, because my son is still there.

"It's nice to know at the back of my mind that I could always pop back if he wasn't doing well or when he's growing up!"

Hawkins added that he was pleased when he heard that his screen brother Joe Swash (Mickey) was being brought back for Darren's final episodes.

"It literally has come full circle. I started with Joe and I finished with Joe," he said. "And it was basically down to Joe that I got the part. He was so successful in building the character of Mickey, that they built the Miller family around him. They decided to bring in the family and I was lucky enough to play his brother."

EastEnders airs Darren's exit episode on Tuesday at 7.30pm on BBC One.
