'EastEnders' named Digital Spy's top soap of 2011

EastEnders has secured the 'Best Soap' title in Digital Spy's 2011 reader poll.

The Walford drama triumphed over its rivals Coronation Street, Hollyoaks and Emmerdale in our survey, which asked our 12 million monthly readers to name their highlights in soap, movies, music, gaming, tech and showbiz over the past year.

EastEnders fans have witnessed another eventful year in Albert Square, with high-profile storylines including Ronnie and Kat's baby swap, Whitney's sexual exploitation, Tanya's battle with cancer, Phil's stalker hell and Yusef's manipulation of the Masood family.

Kat has a lot to say and doesn't hold back as she confronts Ronnie.

The show is also about to air some dramatic Christmas episodes which see Yusef's storyline reach an explosive climax and Phil's mystery tormentor finally revealed.

EastEnders' executive producer Bryan Kirkwood said today: "We're delighted that the Digital Spy community have voted EastEnders as the 'Best Soap' in this year's poll. This tops off a fantastic year for us here in Walford and we hope you all enjoy what we've got planned for 2012."

Coronation Street took second place in the poll, followed by Hollyoaks in third and Emmerdale in fourth.
