'EastEnders' star Nitin Ganatra: 'Dark plots are exciting'

By
EastEnders star Nitin Ganatra has revealed that he does not want the dark side of Masood Ahmed to disappear for good.

Viewers saw Masood pushed to his limits last year as twisted Yusef Khan (Ace Bhatti) began to tear his family apart.

Things look brighter for Masood in next week's episodes as he enjoys a reunion with his mischievous brother AJ (Phaldut Sharma) and also sets a date to remarry partner Zainab (Nina Wadia).

Speaking to Digital Spy about last year's big storylines for Masood, Ganatra commented: "It was really fun for me to explore a darker side, because it just means that the character doesn't become too predictable. What's lovely about Masood and what keeps me interested as an actor is that he can play light and dark - he's a very flexible, malleable character.

"That's exciting for me to play. There is a lot of light and dark, and I think at the moment we are concentrating on the lighter side. But I have a feeling that it may get dark again."

Ganatra added that he is still waiting to hear what to expect from Masood and Zainab's upcoming wedding.

He confirmed: "The Masood and Zainab wedding has been much debated! I think there was a point where it was going to be low-key, but I know that Nina and I would love to do a big Bollywood dance number. Well, Nina would!

"None of that has resolved itself yet, so we don't know where the wedding is going to go yet. They're keeping us in the dark over that, so it'll be a nice surprise either way."

EastEnders airs AJ's arrival next Monday (July 9) at 8pm on BBC One.
