The actor was cast in the part of Joey Branning earlier this year and began appearing on the Walford drama from June.
Speaking on Daybreak this morning (October 31), Witts confessed that becoming a familiar face among the public takes some adjusting to.
Witts commented: "I grew up in a family that watched the soaps in and out, but we were never massive fans who followed them. So when I joined the show, it takes a couple of months filming to come on screen, and the producers were saying to me, 'Your life's going to change'.
"I thought, 'No, because I wouldn't recognise anyone from a soap, so why would anyone else?' So it does come as quite a surprise when people do!"
Asked whether playing a 'love rat' character comes naturally to him, he replied: "No! It's been really interesting, actually, to play against type with Joey. I think just by talking to me in these few minutes you'll probably be able to realise that I'm nothing like him. But it's been really good fun to explore that."
Witts won the 'Sexiest Male' prize at the 2012 Inside Soap Awards last month, but insisted that he likes to stay in shape for himself rather than his TV role.
He said: "[Bodybuilding] has been a hobby of mine to be honest for four or five years now. It's not something where I've thought, 'Well, I'm going into TV now, let's start training'. Everyone's got a hobby and that's mine."
EastEnders continues tomorrow (November 1) at 7.30pm on BBC One.
