'EastEnders' is top Thursday soap with 8.7m

EastEnders topped Thursday evening's (January 3) soap ratings with the continued fallout from the show's Christmas storylines, overnight figures show.

The Walford drama pulled in 8.68m (36.7%) at 7.30pm on BBC One as Joey returned to Walford to support Alice, and Kirsty sparked more problems for Max and Tanya. BBC Three's repeat screening secured 478k (2.6%) at 10.30pm.

Emmerdale, meanwhile, attracted 7.36m (32.7%) at 7pm on ITV1 and 165k (0.7%) on +1 as Alex's murder came back to haunt Cameron. 6.65m (27.5%) returned at 8pm and 300k (1.2%) on +1 as Charity walked out on Jai.

Waterloo Road's return appealed to 3.85m (16.1%) at 8pm on BBC One as the troublesome Barry clan arrived at the school.

Hollyoaks interested 1.17m (5.5%) at 6.30pm on Channel 4 as Brendan ordered Joel to kill Seamus, while E4's first look had 525k (2.3%) at 7pm.

Elsewhere, the latest episode of Doctors was seen by 1.6m (18.8%) at 1.45pm on BBC One.
