EastEnders' Janine Butcher: 9 memorable moments

By
EastEnders schemer Janine Butcher will bow out on screen over the next few episodes as her dark storyline comes to a head.

Actress Charlie Brooks - who has played Janine on and off since 1999 - confirmed her decision to leave the show in October, revealing that she wants to pursue new projects.

Upcoming episodes of the soap will see Janine's plan to get away with the murder of Michael Moon left in serious jeopardy following her confession to David Wicks last week. However, Janine's latest scheme is just one of many and the character has been involved in several dramatic storylines over the years.

We take a look back at some of her most memorable moments...

Barry and the cliff
One of Janine's standout moments over the years is undoubtedly her role in husband Barry's death on New Year's Day 2004. Janine married Barry in Scotland on New Year's Eve, but he met an untimely death the following day after the newlyweds argued during a walk on the mountains. Janine had only married Barry for his money, believing he was dying of a heart condition, but she was horrified to discover that he wasn't actually dying at all and in fact, could be around for years! She wasted no time in telling him a few home truths but when a devastated Barry went to touch her, she pushed him away and over the edge of a cliff…

Laura's death
Pat Butcher got revenge on Janine for Barry's death by refusing to give her an alibi for the night Laura Beale died. Janine had a very heated argument with enemy Laura the same evening that she fell down the stairs and died, but Pat refused to let her get away with her previous crime and put Janine firmly in the frame. This led to Janine's departure from Walford in 2004, but we later learned that she wasn't actually convicted for Laura's murder.

The Jewish Wedding and her return to Walford
In 2008, Pat and Ricky Butcher were furious to discover that Janine was masquerading as a Jewish orphan in order to marry an elderly Jewish man named David for his money. They traced Janine to the synagogue where the wedding was taking place but just after they were pronounced man and wife, Pat busted in and declared Janine a fraud before the congregation. However, the events took their toll on David and he had a heart attack and died, leaving a now-homeless Janine with no choice but to return to Walford.

Danielle's death
As the nation rooted for Ronnie Mitchell to be reunited with long-lost daughter Danielle Jones, Janine was driving through the Square in a rage. In a cruel twist of fate, Janine ran over Danielle seconds after Ronnie had caught up with her and she subsequently died in her mother's arms…

Archie engagement
Janine met her match in Archie Mitchell back in 2009 after originally trying to scheme him out of his money. After announcing their engagement at Christmas, Archie threw Janine out of the Vic, leaving her distraught and furious. Archie had been double-crossing Janine all along order to get his hands on The Vic, and after he was murdered, Janine became a likely suspect.

Janine reveals Stacey killed Archie
Consumed with jealousy over husband Ryan's bond with Stacey Branning and their daughter Lily, Janine became determined to put a spanner in the works. When she found out that they were actually having an affair, Janine poisoned Ryan, leaving him bedridden for days. However, Stacey was in further trouble after Janine discovered that she was Archie Mitchell's murderer, announcing it to the entire pub on Christmas Eve 2010. Janine then attempted to frame Stacey once and for all by stabbing herself, but Stacey managed to flee the country before the police caught up with her.

Lydia and her fortune
After receiving news that her and Ricky's ill grandmother needed care, Janine was quick to take her in with the full intention of inheriting her fortune once she died. However, to her surprise, Janine genuinely started to care about Lydia, admitting that the money wasn't important to her anymore. After Lydia's death, Janine was left grief-stricken, but soon learned that Lydia had made her the sole beneficiary of her will, leaving Janine a millionaire.

Michael's death
Things got out of hand when Janine's final showdown with estranged husband Michael took place in the autumn, following months of feuding between the two. Michael had planned to kill Janine with sleeping pills with the help of loyal ally Alice Branning, but his world fell apart when he discovered he had been set up by the two of them. As a massive fight ensued, Michael was murdered by Janine but she wasted no time in framing a distraught and confused Alice for the crime.

Following her confession to David last week, Janine's dark storyline will come to a head over the next few episodes. However, show bosses have teased that it won't be the last time viewers see Janine as her exit has a "coda" further on down the line.
