Jane, played by Laurie Brett, shocked her ex-husband Ian by turning up at his home unexpectedly in the cliffhanger of Monday night's episode (January 6).
Show bosses decided not to announce the storyline twist before transmission so that fans would be surprised. However, viewers had seen Ian's son Peter (Ben Hardy) make a mysterious phone call last week, wanting help to deal with his father's latest troubles.
Brett spoke out on Twitter this evening after being flooded with messages from shocked fans.
Thank you so much for the amazing response.. It's rare to keep anything a secret,so glad we managed it @dominictc . Glad you enjoyed it! Xx— Laurie Brett (@LauriebrettX) January 6, 2014
Ian (Adam Woodyatt) has recently been pushed to the edge once again as his long-time nemesis Phil Mitchell has been threatening him in order to break up Peter's blossoming relationship with Lola Pearce.
The Walford businessman has also grown frustrated over his own love life following failed attempts to propose to Denise Fox (Diane Parish).
Brett last appeared on EastEnders in January 2012, when Jane left Albert Square to take up a new job in Cardiff.
After departing the soap, Brett moved on to Waterloo Road in the role of Christine Mulgrew.
