Former EastEnders actress Hilda Braid has died at the age of 78.

Hilda - who appeared as Nana Moon in the BBC soap between 2002 and 2005 - passed away peacefully at the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton, East Sussex after having suffered from a period of ill health.

An EastEnders spokesman said: "We at EastEnders are very sorry to learn that Hilda has passed away. She was a lovely actress who brought her great humour and wit to the role of Nana Moon which earned her many fans, young and old alike.

"She was a much-loved member of our cast who appeared in over 200 episodes of EastEnders, most notably the award-winning episode that saw her character, Nana Moon, visit her beloved late husband's grave in Normandy with grandson Alfie Moon (Shane Richie).

They added: "Everyone at EastEnders sends deepest sympathies and condolences to her family and close friends at this sad time."

Hilda made appearances in Casualty, The Bright Life and Citizen Smith as well as various stage performances.
