'Enders not copying Corrie's Sean Tully

EastEnders' new gay character will not share similarities with Coronation Street's Sean Tully.

John Partridge, who is joining the show as Jane Beale's gay brother Christian, has insisted that it would be "stupid" for the producers to copy camp Sean, played by Antony Cotton.

"I'm not trying to be the new Antony Cotton," John told the Daily Star. "He's a fantastic actor and does what he does extremely well. It would be stupid to come in and copy the character he has made so successful."

"It's about time EastEnders had a gay character in the show," he added. "It's been a while and things have moved on a lot. Christian, like me, is an openly proud gay man and he is certainly going to ruffle a few feathers when he arrives."
