British acting legend Ray Winstone has jokingly brushed off the possibility of a fatherly EastEnders role.

It was rumoured that the 50-year-old Vincent star was in the running to play Archie Mitchell – the mysterious father of Mitchell sisters Ronnie and Roxy, played by Sam Janus and Rita Simons respectively.

The actor, who is good friends with Janus, joked: "I'll play her fella but I'm not playing her dad!"

An EastEnders spokeswoman told DS: "There are no current plans for Archie Mitchell to appear in the show. The character, however, is mentioned in the scripts."

Since joining the BBC soap, the on-screen sisters have declared they would love to see a Hollywood star take on the role of their father.
