Wellard's final moments on the Square

It's the end of the road for EastEnders' longest-serving canine character next week as Wellard is put to sleep by a vet when he becomes seriously ill.
I'm not ashamed to admit that I cried when I first saw the scenes at the weekend. It's an extremely upsetting moment, especially when little Tiffany (Maisie Smith) tells Bianca (Patsy Palmer): "I think he just wants to go to sleep."
I've not yet discovered whether Wellard will receive the 'Julia's Theme' treatment - that's the sad, piano outro EastEnders plays when one of its long-serving or much-loved characters leaves the show. The theme was last heard at the end of Frank Butcher's funeral earlier this year.
These scenes air on Friday, August 15 on BBC One at 8pm.
