First Picture: 'EastEnders' Joel Reynolds

Published Thursday, Jul 23 2009, 00:23 BST | By Kris Green | 37 comments
As you may have already read, Pulling actor Cavan Clerkin has been cast in the role of Ronnie Mitchell's (Samantha Womack) first love Joel Reynolds.

Now I don't know about you, but he is nothing like I expected him to look. I was thinking more along the lines of another Jack Branning (Scott Maslen).

But no, nothing like...

Maybe that's what the producers intended, though? For us to finally meet the man who Ronnie's built up as this amazing guy and only to discover that he's just your average Joe-l.

What do you think? Do you hope that Ronnie will manage to gain some closure from Joel's reappearance? Maybe they'll hit it off again? Or is this a relationship that's best off left well alone?

What are your thoughts? Let me know using the usual form below.

Let Joel be the closure she needs and continue with the Ryan and Ronnie story. I love them together and hope he's the one to give her the baby she wants so badly. Jack Branning sucks big time and nowhere near good enough. Why do people want her to be with someone who always makes her unhappy with his cheating, lying and now he's working with Archie.

He should have remained as just a name from the past. If they wanted to bring him back at least find somebody who is more competition for Jack. I hope his role is to offer some closure for Ronnie and go. EE should move on from all this doom and gloom for Ronnie. One can only cope with so much misery!! That is not what people loved about Ronnie. Please don't ruin her character Santer!

He's not what Ronnie built him up to be. He's not what I expected!

Would this still have a happy ending for Ronnie?

It's about personality not looks :) his hair style reminded me of Norris Cole off Corrie a bit. Maybe he'll bring Ronnie good after she wanted to meet up with him or he may bring her bad and she'll regret wanting to see him again. Who knows?? that's what EastEnders is all about!!

Why is everyone complaining Joel isn't so hot?? Isn't he supposed to be about 35 anyway with a wife and kids. The fact is Joel was Ronnie's first love so she's going to have feelings for him - whether he looks like George Clooney or not. I think it'll definitely be interesting for him to come back and pour salt into the wounds. But the heavens sake - get rid of the Jack/Roxy/Ronnie love triangle! It's getting so boring.

No Joel has not appeared before. The guy who appeared after the reunion was Joel's best pal. He had a brief fling with Christian. I agree with Angela from London...........Sam Womack is the best EE has to offer at the moment in terms of female leading ladies ! Hold on to her Santer I say :-)

I thought "Joel" had already been in EE?? After the school reunion didn't he make a very brief appearance in The Vic but Ronnie didn't want anything to do with him? Or did I dream it??
Angela, London, on July 24th, 2009
Disappointing. Personally I think Ronnie should be with Jack. Anyway I hope Ronnie's storyline remains interesting as I don't want Sam to leave EE. If that was to happen I will stop watching it.

I really wanted ronnie and jack to stay together.. but now they've added 'joel' to the sqaure... i think they could have actually made joel a little bit more gorrge to be honest... i mean who would leave jack branning for him?!
Nicky, Leicester, on July 23rd, 2009
Am also am doubting there will be some soppy scenes about Danielle/Amy? Why would there be? Joel didn't know her and hasn't been bothered for 20 years to find out about "Amy", why does everyone have this weird thought that he will suddenly care now? And what about his other family? A lot of assumptions are being made that this will some sweet new relationship?! How will people feel if Ronnie is just a bit on the side from an ex taking advantage of his rather hotter ex showing an interest? Gets it on with Ronnie and then trots on home to his family. Jack may be a lot of things and not always done right by ronnie. But she was never his bit on the side!

Any one else think Barry Evans when they saw him? Sorry... but this has disaster written all over it.
Sarah, London , on July 23rd, 2009
Surprised at the casting but still can't wait til he arrives and see Jack's reaction.

I think he's hot!

He looks not as I would expect! I thought he would have long hair and be a bit rough looking. Hopefully Ronnie will be happy!!

My view is that this character seems to be a average character for the show , he doesn't seem to be a good guy or a bad guy from the picture , but I will give the character a chance on screen and it will be interesting to see the interaction between his life after he left Ronnie and Ronnie's recent life events.

I've seen Pulling on BBC Three and he is a good actor. I look forward to seeing him in EastEnders.

Ah ! I think this chap is actually quite dishy ! He has kind eyes. And, whilst I am certainly not a fan of what EE did to the R & D story, I must say that I believe they have put a significant amount of thought into casting this chap. Yes, he is not the stereotypical type Ronnie goes for.....i.e. Jack, Ryan however remember Ronnie is not superficial when it comes to people...her character has that softer side which we have seen evidence of with Dan, Roxy, Peggy and even Billy ! And remeber he has been described as "odd" and even Ronnie honed in on Dan being "odd....nice odd.....but odd"................Casting this chap is more than likely going to allow us to see Ronnie's softer side coming to the fore again...she is bound to open up to Joel about Dan and hopefully our mr. santer will correct his mistake thus far of not having Ronnie discuss Dan and speak about the lovely person she was....OH I STILL MISS THAT PAIRING ON SCREEN !!!!

Well anyone who has seen Pulling (best sitcom about drunken slags in the world, ever) will know that Cavan is a fantastic actor. Which is surely the most important thing! After all, Max and Phil aren't exactly fit but are ten times the characters that Jack or Sean ever were.. Personally I'd rather have fugly with some substance over a hot to trot sub standard eye-brow actor any day of the week!
