Poll: Was 'EastEnders' right to kill off Owen?

Published Saturday, Nov 28 2009, 00:02 GMT | By Kris Green | 17 comments
Last week, I asked whether you thought Coronation Street's Tony Gordon would really have handed himself in to the police or not.

You spoke in your thousands and clearly, you don't think he would have bowed out as 'gracefully' as he did.

The majority (53.7%) don't think that the former knicker boss would have really walked into a police station and confessed to murder, believing that he'd probably have killed himself before he did that.

Meanwhile, 27.9% of those who voted thought Tony's actions were believable as he more than likely couldn't handle the guilt for much longer.

The remaining 18.5% couldn't say either way.

I'm with the masses on this one. I'm not totally convinced that Tony would have confessed so coolly and calmly to killing his wife's lover. I can see why he may have done that, but in the circumstances, I believe he'd have ended his own life on the canal bridge before sentencing himself to life imprisonment.

If he had killed himself, though, we wouldn't have a trial, would we?...

Moving on to this week's EastEnders-themed question, in which I ask 'Was EastEnders right to kill off Owen?'

Thursday evening's hour-long episode of EastEnders saw Walford pastor Lucas Johnson (Don Gilet) kill in cold blood for the first time as he strangled his wife's ex-lover Owen Turner (Lee Ross) to death with a bow tie.

I actually saw the death scene a couple of months ago on the day I recorded The Two Faces of Lucas and it was such a shock to see the death without knowing how it was going to happen! I'm actually quite surprised that they released the pictures of the death before the episode.

Lee Ross has floated in and out of EastEnders for the past few years, so it was no surprise that this stint was going to be another short one.

In the lead-up to the episode and after it had aired, many fans were complaining that killing off Owen was a big mistake because he's such a good character - and Lee Ross is such a good actor. Some, however, argued that the story called for the death.

But do you think it was right to kill his character off?

Let me know by placing your vote using the console below.
