As Ryan fails to respond to Janine's marriage proposal, Janine laughs off the matter and pretends it was a joke. Although Pat warns Janine that she will end up lonely if she continues acting as if she has no feelings, Janine tries to make herself feel better by flirting with some lads at the pub. Meanwhile, Ryan discusses the situation with Whitney at Pat's house.

When Whitney tells Bianca and Tiffany about Janine's proposal, Tiffany hands Ryan the zircon ring he gave to Janine on holiday and tells him to propose to her properly. Ryan is uncertain over what to do, but at the pub later, Pat tells him to take a chance with Janine and not play it safe all his life. Ryan finds Janine in the Square, gets down on his knees and offers her the ring, telling her to take a risk. Janine wells up and accepts his proposal - and it's clear that Ryan is pleased but also scared.

Meanwhile, a furious Shirley tells Peggy that she found Phil and Rainie naked in their living room, with bottles everywhere. Later, Shirley goes out with Heather to celebrate being single again. In Argee Bhajee, Shirley starts flirting with a handsome waiter, making inappropriate suggestions. As she continues to drunkenly flirt and dance, Shirley declares that she is better than the tart that Phil is with. Later, Shirley sits on the kerb in the Square, in a wretched state. Janine approaches her and makes a snide remark about how Shirley and Phil are made for each other, as they are both 'drunken slobs' in the gutter. Shirley tells Janine that she is on that route too.

Elsewhere, Max taunts Jack as he uses tough love to help him with his recovery; Peggy meets Ken, a representative from a big brewery who wants to buy The Vic; Max vows not to be Jack's best man until he is able to walk down the aisle; and Peggy warms to Ken but is adamant that she won't let his company ruin the pub.
