The 27-year-old, who plays DC Will Fletcher, will bow out of the show in a few months' time upon the expiry of his current contract, which ties him with the series until September.
He will remain on screen until late December and the door will be left open for a potential return in the future.
A spokeswoman for the show this morning told DS: "Gary Lucy has decided not to renew his contract when it comes up for renewal in September."
They added: "After four years, he is taking a break from The Bill to explore other projects, but there is always an opportunity for him to return."
A tabloid newspaper today reports that he is preparing to compete in the next series of Dancing On Ice "in a bid to raise his profile".
He began his acting career in Hollyoaks as Luke Morgan, before going on to star in three series of Footballers' Wives as Kyle Pascoe alongside former Bill co-star Gillian Taylforth, who played his screen mum Jackie.
