Ali Bastian has admitted that she feels "very sad" over ITV's decision to axe The Bill after 27 years.

The actress, who played PC Sally Armstrong in the police drama, told The Sun that the broadcaster's surprise move was "a heartbreaker".

She added: "I'm very sad. It's such an institution and so many people will lose their jobs."

Bastian bowed out from her role in the show last year and went on to compete in Strictly Come Dancing.

ITV announced The Bill's axing last month following a slump in ratings for the programme.

Since the news was confirmed, fans have launched a fight to save the show and a Facebook campaign group titled "Save The Bill!" now has almost 20,000 members.
