The 38-year-old actress - who starred as law buff Milly in the cult BBC2 show - will assume the role of new Detective Constable Grace Desari, an ambitious woman who finds herself at the station after accepting a six-month secondment from the Special Projects branch.
Amita joked: "I like to keep on the right side of the law. It’ll be nice to view things from the police point of view for a change. Grace is quite a cool customer - not good at dealing with emotion.
"I’m looking forward to getting under her skin a bit. I think she’s really going to shake things up."
An show source told The Sun: "She won’t always see eye-to-eye with Sun Hill CID."
Grace Desari will first appear on-screen in mid-June.
