Poll: Will you be watching 'The Bill' at 9pm?
Published Saturday, Jul 11 2009, 00:02 BST | By Kris Green | 12 comments
This week's poll's a little different in that everyone knows the answer before I've even published the results! So, casting your minds back, I asked Who is Whitney's mystery male follower?.
An overwhelming 75% of those polled guessed correctly that Ryan (yep, that's his name) is a relative of Whitney. In fact, he was yesterday revealed as her half-brother. They have the same mother in Debra Dean (Ruth Gemmell), but it's fair to say that Ryan's not her biggest fan. Debra's not a fan of Ryan's, come to think of it.
So it's Whitney who finds herself in the middle of a mother and son wrangle. But why is Ryan in Walford? Put it this way, he's looking for something. Something quite important...
Without further ado, here's where the remaining 25 of the votes went:
Someone else 9.3%
An escaped prisoner 8.9%
A stalker 4.4%
An admirer 2.4%
Now onto this week's The Bill-based question. Before that actually, here's a first look at one of the photos from the first 9pm episode 'Live By The Sword'.

If you don't already know, The Bill's moving to a post-watershed timeslot at 9pm on Thursdays. At the beginning of the year, it was announced that the police drama's output was being cut in half and would only air once a week.
From July 23, The Bill will be found in the schedule just after a newly-placed Thursday episode of Coronation Street.
I popped along to the press screening a couple of weeks ago for an advance look of the first episode in the 9pm format and I have to say, I was quite surprised by what I was watching. The show's opener is pacey and has you glued from the outset, while the new theme and credits were a refreshing change. As was mentioned at the press event, you can't have a 'new show' hampered by an old theme and credits. The new music and graphics will take a little getting used to by hardcore fans, but after a couple of episodes, it'll be like they've been there for months.
Then there's the musical score. On first watch, I personally felt there to be a little too much 'chase' or 'mood' music. However... On a second watching, it's not really noticeable. Why? I think it's the knee-jerk reaction to say that there's too much of something in a show which never had that something before.
As for the story, I can't wait to see the next episode! It's a two-part opener over consecutive nights (July 23 and 24) and I'm left eagerly awaiting the second DVD!
I'd say to anyone who hasn't watched The Bill properly in a good few years to give the new 9pm show a go. Meanwhile, those fans who have watched the show for years and are sceptical of the impending change, it's worth giving it a chance. I think you might be surprised.
If you're not convinced, then I'd suggest you have a read of my interview with series producer Tim Key to see what he has to say about the revamp.
With all that said, what are your thoughts on the forthcoming 9pm episodes of The Bill? Will you be watching? Cast your vote using the panel below.

My wife and I would LOVE to tune into The Bill on Thursdays at 2100 hours! But despite much pleading STV, the ITV1 provider in our area, has AXED it. Please tell us what within reason we can do to continue watching this great series! Although I haven't stopped watching the show (its one of the best on TV!) I do agree with James that the new 'film effects' are awful! They've made the show just like every other crime drama on TV and got rid of what made The Bill unique - the normality of it! I will be watching the new shows though to see what they're like - hopefully they'll surprise me!

Will definitely watch The Bill at 9p.m STV and its odd ideas make me mad. We keep missing so many good programmes and can only hope the new policy implodes and brings the 'I know best' brigade' to its knees. Do they realise the disappointment such decisions to drop well established entertainment causes. Thannk you for ways around local restrictions

Very disappointed that The Bill will only be shown once a week - it's the best ITV series. don't care when they show it.

I think that be great time at 9pm to put on. It will be great to have Wednesdays and Thursdays nights at that time. I love the show. I wonder would I be able go on as an extra? How would you do that??

So what about Tuesday 8pm because on Tuesday nothing on TV but Holby City some people don't watch it. Lots of people watch The Bill. I want Tuesday 8pm, Wedensday 9pm and Thursday 9pm.

@Alex and James: ITV signed a deal to transmit football every Wednesday. That's why they've moved Corrie and The Bill. Nothing to do with ratings. talkbackTHAMES who make The Bill have no say in when or whether it goes out, but Thursday 9pm will be a regular slot that shouldn't be bumped as The Bill often has been when it was at 8PM.

I've already stopped watching the show on account of the awful film effect they've started using. Nothing else I've heard about the post watershed episodes fills me with confidence either. Thanks for putting off a long term viewer of the show. Why couldn't they have just kept the show how it was?

I've been watching The Bill for sometime now and it was getting really boring so the team tried to bring in swat teams and other cool stunts but then it become samey after a while , but it has got better now over time again so I think that 9pm slot may add to that but being reduced to just one episode a week makes me think that the ratings are falling and The Bill may be cut from the TV by the end of the year or something.

While I'll be giving it a go it seems STV will not so will be retuning to an ITV channel south of the Border to keep watching :( [This might be worth a look: http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/digitaltv/a163732/how-to-watch-the-bill-in-scotland.html - KG]

It's about time The Bill was taken off screen. It's full of childlike coppers these days.
