Around 30 writers gathered outside a house used in the show in LA, chanting: "We write the story-a, Eva Longoria."
The actress left the property and gave out the snacks, saying that filming would finish the following day and she would then be joining the picket lines.
She told reporters: "I have a whole crew that will have a terrible holiday season because there's no resolution. I care about people losing their homes, I care about my hair and makeup artists who can't make ends meet."
The show's creator Marc Cherry said he was happy for the writers to picket the location as long as they were not disrespectful to the actors.
But co-star James Denton (Mike Delfino) said not all the cast were supportive of the move, telling a radio station that one star felt she would not be affected. He revealed that he was forced to explain that "no writing would mean no work", saying: "I felt the need to point out to her that it was going to cost her £13,000 a day."
Desperate Housewives will stop production today after running out of scripts. At least six sitcoms filmed before live audiences will also be halted because of the strike.
