A real family affair

Aired Friday, Sep 20 2002 at 18:30 BST on Five

Matt is furious to learn that his wife and her Aussie lover are still in a relationship. Pete’s suspicions about Charlotte and Johnny prove well-founded, so he hatches a plot to catch them out. Gemma sleeps with Cameron and considers calling off her marriage to Paul. In a fit of pique, Geri tells Jessica that she is pregnant with Robert’s child. And after begging Jude not to leave the family, Ginny kisses him. It’s a real family affair…

Charnham’s arch manipulator Pete Callan is up to his old tricks: after hiding Charlotte’s mobile phone to prevent her from receiving messages from Lucy, he then intercepts a letter sent between the sisters. He’s already suspicious about Johnny and Charlotte’s relationship – especially following Palmer’s request to hold a Funktions event at the pub – and the note prompts Callan to set a trap for the secret lovers. So he lures the pair into a romantic tryst by pretending to be away on business. But just as the pair head upstairs at the pub, Siobhan warns them that Pete may know what they’re up to...

Callan’s early return certainly leaves Charlotte startled, but he seems satisfied with the results of his test. Later, he surprises the guilty Ms Day by presenting her with an engagement ring – much to her relief, and Johnny’s dismay. Johnny’s heartbreak may be short-lived, though: Pete realises that Siobhan may have warned the couple, and, upon finding the letter from Lucy in Pete’s jacket, Charlotte realises that Pete knows...

Meanwhile, Matt’s heart is aching, too, when he finally learns from Kelly that she and Karen are together as a couple. However, Kelly is the one left truly shaken when he subjects her to a frightening physical confrontation.

Elsewhere, Gemma is beginning to feel the pressure of the wedding, and gives in to her desires, sleeping with the best man, Cameron. Cameron, for one, is panicked by the bride-to-be’s dramatic revelation that she can’t marry Paul. But when it comes to the crunch, she simply can’t break her clueless fiancé’s heart. And as Cameron reveals that he doesn’t want a relationship with her, even if she does end things with Paul, Gemma’s hesitation may work to her advantage – if not Paul’s.

Elsewhere, Jessica is appalled to learn that Geri is pregnant with Robert’s child and furious when she realises that Jude knew and kept her in the dark. Cameron is shocked by the news too, but is more perturbed when Ginny goes out for a drink with Jude. And well he might be – after revealing her desperation for him to stay, Mrs Davenport ends up locking lips with her brother-in-law. Will Jude ever get it on with anyone from outside his family?
