He told The Sun that he had "fond memories" of performing on the show and praised its format as an interesting way of observing the social history of a time and place.
Kingsley said: "Oh I did enjoy my time on Coronation Street. I said I might go back, have a pint in the Rovers Return.
"This took place in Salford, so it was very much my territory and my background. It was a marvellous show."
He compared filming on the soap to theatre or live television and added that it was "very exciting".
Kingsley played Ron Jenkins on the show from 1966 to 1967. He went on to win an Oscar in 1982 for his title role in Richard Attenborough's Ghandi.
Earlier this week, it was revealed that a Coronation Street video game will be released for the Nintendo DS later this year.
