Corrie's Fiz discusses screen engagement
Coronation Street's Jennie McAlpine has suggested that her character Fiz Brown's secret engagement to imprisoned kidnapper John Stape (Graeme Hawley) is only the start of their problems.

At the end of last month, a worried Fiz asked John for his hand in marriage via the prison's CCTV. The former teacher gladly accepted but unbeknown to him, his bride-to-be dare not reveal her impending nuptials to anyone on the Street for fear of their reaction.

Speaking exclusively to DS at the launch of this year's Inside Soap Awards, McAlpine said: "Whether there is a wedding on the horizon or not, we don't know because there's an engagement... but this is only the start of the trouble really. She's proposed and now she's like 'oh, sugar, I'm engaged, now what am I going to do?' because half the Street - if not three quarters! - absolutely detest this man.

"She absolutely keeps it a secret and pretends it hasn't happened! Apart from telling Hayley, who has always been her confidante... And the one person she's avoiding telling like there's no tomorrow is Chesney."

She added: "If Fiz thinks that she's going to be the first person in the history of Coronation Street or, indeed soap, to keep a mammoth secret secret, she's got another thing coming."
