The 44-year-old, who played nurse Martin Platt on the ITV1 drama for two decades, told This Is Nottingham that Jones did not realise how much she was loved by the public.
Jones passed away at the age of 75 earlier this month. The actress, who became a soap legend in her role as battleaxe Blanche Hunt, had suffered ill health for some time.
Reflecting on his experiences with the star, Wilson commented: "We used to do the crossword together. Well, Maggie actually did it - I would just help. She was rather good at crosswords. She was a wholesome, happy, rounded person. Not at all like Blanche."
He added: "Maggie would have been the last person to realise how popular she was."
Earlier this week, Jones's life was celebrated at a private funeral service which was attended by family, friends and colleagues.
