Coronation Street star Sue Nicholls has revealed that she is pleased to see David Platt backing mum Gail throughout her current legal predicament.

David, played by actor Jack P. Shepherd, has stood by Gail (Helen Worth) since the suspicious death of her fourth husband Joe last month. He steps up his support over the next few episodes when the troubled Weatherfield favourite is put behind bars on suspicion of murder.

In an interview with DS, Nicholls - who plays Gail's mother Audrey Roberts - said that the soap's producers had made a good choice in changing the dynamic of the Platt family for the storyline.

She commented: "I'm still a bit stunned both as Audrey and as Sue Nicholls. It's a good swap-around. Nobody would have thought of it. I'm surprised both as a viewer and his grandma."

On what it is like to work with Shepherd, Nicholls explained: "I do love him - he's a splendid actor and I do love having scenes with him. I hope he does with me. We do laugh a lot despite everything.

"I'm always saying, 'Oh, David!' a bit like Posh Spice! I like the relationship we have. I have met people who have a better relationship with grandparents, in a funny way.

"I know that sounds a bit strange but sometimes people who are difficult have more of a contact with another generation. David and Gail have never really connected until now."
