Actor Bruce Jones has apparently pledged to give up alcohol after he admitted drunkenly trying to kill himself and his wife while he was behind the wheel.

The former Coronation Street star pleaded guilty to dangerous driving and drunk driving when he appeared for trial at Mold Crown Court yesterday.

Jones, 57, had earlier denied threatening to drive under a truck when he fell into a rage with his wife Sandra last August. However, The Mirror reports that he changed his plea after it emerged that his wife of more than 26 years would have to give evidence for a second time.

"There are no circumstances in which he would wish her to go through that again," said lawyer Dominic D’Souza after a retrial was ordered.

"Mr Jones accepts for the first time he has a drink problem which needs to be addressed," he continued. "It's caused him significant problems over the last five or six years and resulted in him being in this situation. He wants to get his life together and save a marriage that has lasted more than 26 years."

Jones, of Alderley Edge, Cheshire, is set to be sentenced next month.
