Former Coronation Street star Wendi Peters has insisted that she always knew she would go back to being a jobbing actress when she quit the show.

The 42-year-old bowed out as Weatherfield schemer Cilla Battersby-Brown in 2007 after four years in the role because she wanted to spend more time with her family.

Speaking in an interview with Live From Studio Five last night, Peters explained that she had no ambitions to launch a movie career or become a bigger star when she made the decision.

She explained: "I'd worked in the theatre and done other things for 15 years before that. I wasn't leaving with any illusions that I was going to be starring in films or this, that and the other.

"I'm a jobbing actress and you go from one job to the other. That's what you do and I love entertaining people."

Reflecting on her time with the soap, she added: "To say I've been part of it is fantastic. Corrie is going to go down in the history books. 50 years this year it's been going for, and it was an absolute honour to be there and work on that show. It was lovely."

Peters's comedy show Grumpy Old Women 2 begins a residency at the London Novello Theatre on April 14.
