Coronation Street producer Phil Collinson has promised that the 50th anniversary week will be "action-packed".
Collinson told Digital Spy that the block of episodes - one of which will be live - will feature "twists and turns" as a tram crashes on to the street.
"Coronation Street was live from its very beginning," he said. "It did a live on its 40th, so we were the first to do one."
He continued: "This week is going to be action-packed. Lots of twists and turns, lots of big drama happening and that's at the heart of what Tony [Warren] created all those years ago.
"The live will be live like you've never seen it before I hope - which may work and it may not, but that's all part of doing live."
Collinson admitted that it had been a "heck of a year" to join the ITV soap.
"It's like taking over at Manchester United," he said. "It's massive coming here and doing this. What a year to do it!"
ITV has also confirmed details of special Corrie programming which will be broadcast in December.
