Former Coronation Street star Tina O'Brien has predicted that her character Sarah Platt would have stood by mum Gail throughout her prison ordeal.

Gail - played by Helen Worth - was jailed for several weeks earlier this year as she awaited trial over the suspected murder of her husband Joe McIntyre.

Although not everyone on the Street believed Gail's protestations of innocence, she was ultimately found not guilty back in June.

Speaking to Inside Soap, O'Brien commented: "I can't believe Gail's been in jail! If Sarah had been there, she'd have fought for her.

"They love each other to bits, even though they've always had a stormy relationship. She'd always be on her mum's side."

Reflecting on her Weatherfield stint, she added: "I loved every minute of being in Corrie. It brought me a different lifestyle and I met so many new people - which is what it's all about for me, really. But leaving was the hardest decision I ever made."

O'Brien made her final appearance as Sarah in December 2007 and is currently competing in Strictly Come Dancing.
