Vera Duckworth will appear in her husband Jack's final Coronation Street episode, series producer Phil Collinson has confirmed.

Weatherfield legend Jack - played by 69-year-old Bill Tarmey - makes his last appearance on the cobbles next month after three decades in the soap.

Vera died on screen in January 2008, but over the past few months reports have often suggested that fans will see Liz Dawn reprise the role for Jack's death scene.

Responding to the rumours, Collinson told the Daily Star: "Vera doesn't come back as a ghost. She doesn't come floating in on a wire or anything like that. Her appearance is in context.

"It was amazing to see Liz back and was perfect that one of the last images of Jack alive is the two of them together."

Meanwhile, the newspaper also reports that Jack's final episode sees the terminally-ill character pass away peacefully on his 74th birthday - in the same armchair where Vera died nearly three years ago.

Collinson said: "I think Bill has just been astonishing. I think it's an amazing, beautiful, powerful story. It's the sort of story that you actually should tell. It's about a man facing up to death. That's something we all have to do."

Tarmey filmed his final Corrie scenes last month.
