Coronation Street's iconic Rovers Return pub will be used to treat those injured in the soap's forthcoming 50th anniversary disaster, it has been claimed.

According to the Daily Star, emergency crews will struggle to get down the cobbles after a tram careers off the street's viaduct next month.

It is thought that local doctor Matt Carter (Oliver Mellor) - originally cast as part of Natasha Blakeman's storyline - is forced to take charge in their absence, with help from first aiders Janice Battersby (Vicky Entwistle) and Gail Platt (Helen Worth).

Sean Tully (Antony Cotton) is also expected to offer assistance by handing out shots of brandy to some patients.

A source said: "It's a dark time for them all but it brings them together."

An explosion at The Joinery is expected to spark the tram crash, which will claim the lives of some much-loved characters. Get the Inside Soap magazine on your iPhone or iPad
