The actress, who played Hilda Ogden until 1987, hit out at the show's current characters for lacking the depth of the Street's earlier residents.
"The show isn't the same as it used to be," The Sun quotes her as saying. "It hasn't got the character that it used to have. It's lost its identity somehow.
"You look at the people in it - the young ones particularly - and hardly any have got a job and those who have are paid buttons."
She continued: "And yet you never see them in the same clothes twice. They've got all the latest fashions, the make-up, the hairdos.
"It shouldn't be like that - it's too glossy now. Poor Hilda could only get a pinny off the market every once in a while."
