Coronation Street actor Mikey North has admitted that he gets frustrated by people who "assume" that he has changed because of his role in the soap.

North, who plays troubled soldier Gary Windass in the ITV1 serial, recently claimed that he hates the celebrity status the role brings. Speaking to the TV Times, he revealed that he now only visits his hometown occasionally.

"It is a case of your life changing overnight. You do get used to it, but there are times when I wish, for a few days, to go back to before, when no one knows who you are," he said. "When I go home to Scarborough, people assume I've changed, and it's so upsetting and frustrating."

He continued: "I go home very rarely now, and when I do it's to see my mum and dad. Anywhere I go in the country, everyone is so welcoming and nice; the only place I get grief is in my hometown."
