Betty Driver has revealed that it was her idea to make a documentary about her showbiz career.

It was recently confirmed that Driver will take a look back at her life in an ITV special next month. The Coronation Street star told What's On TV that she and a friend had come up with the idea of doing the programme.

"It was actually an idea I had some time ago with a friend of mine and we suggested it to ITV Granada," she said. "Hopefully, people will enjoy it - it really is only the tip of the iceberg of everything I have done."

The 90-year-old admitted that filming the documentary - which will be narrated by Sir Ian McKellen - had "scared" her at times.

"Getting out all the old photos and talking about it does make you realise how much you have done," she said. "It was also a bit sad, because I would have loved my sister Freda, who died in 2008, to have been here to remember it with me. She would have been 87 this month."

The Betty Driver Story will be broadcast on Tuesday February 1 at 8pm on ITV1.
