Jim McDonald will return to Coronation Street in March for a new storyline involving ex-wife Liz, it has been revealed.

The Weatherfield favourite was last seen on screen before Christmas, when a plot twist saw him savagely beaten - an attack that appeared to have been arranged by Liz's new boyfriend Owen Armstrong (Ian Puleston-Davies).

Inside Soap reports that Jim - played by Charles Lawson - will reappear on screen on March 24 and make a "shocking suggestion" to Liz (Beverley Callard).

Meanwhile, Liz is expected to return home from Spain a week earlier, turning up at The Rovers on March 14. It is thought that she will be shocked by developments which have taken place in her absence - including Tracy Barlow's new position as a barmaid at the pub.

Jim's latest Weatherfield stint is likely to tie in with Liz's exit storyline, as Beverley Callard will soon bow out of the role.

Discussing Liz's departure plot in a recent interview, Callard commented: "It's a fantastic exit and it's absolutely massive, but Liz may not be leaving on her own!"

Lawson has played the role of Jim on and off since 1989.
