Sherrie Hewson has revealed how she once thought that she had murdered Coronation Street co-star Ken Morley.

The actress joined the ITV soap in 1993 as an old flame of Morley's character Reg Holdsworth. In her new autobiography, which is being serialised by The Mirror, she recalled their first meeting.

"We first came face to face in the make-up room," she wrote. "'Hello', he said, staring at me and licking his lips. Right, I thought, go in as you mean to carry on. 'Hi,' I said. 'I understand you're the big, fat b**tard I have to work with'. He smiled and shook his head. 'No, no, no,' he told me, taking his pink glasses off. 'You have to get that right! I'm the big, RICH, fat b**tard!'

"He laughed and walked away. And that was the bond. From that day on we could say anything to each other."

However, Hewson admitted that she almost destroyed the much-loved "double act" when she feared that she had "murdered" Morley.

"He'd taken me on the Granada Studios Tour after the place, vast as an aircraft hangar, had closed to the public," she explained. "When I turned round to say something, Ken had disappeared. I waited a few minutes but there was no sign of him. The place was very spooky and I had no idea how to get out. I started to get really worried.

"I'd wandered about and was in a little cobbled street with a red post-box and a black cat sitting on the top of it. Suddenly, I heard him coming. Determined to get my own back, I hid behind the post-box, picked up the cat, then jumped out, yelled 'Boo!' and threw it at him. The trouble was the cat was made of concrete.

"It hit Ken on the forehead… and knocked him out cold! Horrified, I stared at him. He was motionless. I was convinced I'd killed him."

She continued: "A week into the show and I had bumped off one of its best known stars. I could see the headline: MAUREEN BATTERS REG TO DEATH!"

The Loose Women star confessed that she "panicked" and fled the scene in shock.

"Next morning I decided the best thing was to act normally. I arrived at the studios at seven and went to the Green Room for a coffee," she said. I was a total wreck and decided I'd better tell someone - I couldn't live with myself otherwise. The first person in was Helen Worth (Gail Platt). I didn't know her yet and although she smiled warmly I couldn't fess up. Next was Kevin Kennedy (Curly Watts).

"'Have you seen Ken this morning?', I asked, nervously," she recalled. "'No, why?', asked Kevin. 'Well...' I began. 'I think I've…'. At that moment Ken walked in. I wanted to throw my arms around him and shout, 'You’re alive!' Instead I stayed rooted to the spot, staring at the huge, black lump on his forehead.

As Morley revealed how the injury had been caused, Hewson admitted that she "burst into tears".

"Not surprisingly, it took Ken a long time to forgive me," she added. "Eventually he did and, thankfully, the story never appeared in the papers."

Hewson's autobiography Sherrie: Behind the Laughter will be published on March 3.
