The star's character David Platt has secured a new link with the pair's alter egos Becky and Steve McDonald in recent weeks as he is now engaged to Becky's half-sister Kylie.
Fans of the ITV1 soap recently saw Becky attack David in a massive fight scene at the Platt house. In an interview with Digital Spy, Shepherd confirmed that he hopes the characters will continue to cross paths.
Backing David's new relationship, he commented: "I'm glad… because it's given me a chance to work with Kate Kelly and Simon Gregson and I've not really had many scenes with them before. It's nice that it's opened the door for that because hopefully I can now do some comedy with Simon in The Rovers sometimes.
"Also, the recent fighting scene that I had with Kate was good fun. The storyline has added a new dimension to my character and given me the chance to work with different actors, which is great."
Speaking ahead of David and Kylie's wedding day arriving on Friday, Shepherd insisted that his character's feelings for his fiancée are the real deal.
He said: "I think he does genuinely love Kylie, and he does have a sort of obsessive personality once he goes out with someone - he'll only think of that person and they'll be the centre of his life. We've seen that before with Tina. If the wedding goes ahead, we'll have to see where they are a year down the line and if it'll be any different."
