John's dark storyline, which has seen him involved in three deaths, is expected to reach its final act in the coming months as his many secrets start to unravel.
Some reports have suggested that John will die as the plot reaches its climax, while others have stated that he will get away with his crimes by boarding a ferry to Europe and going on the run.
In an interview with Inside Soap, McAlpine, who plays John's wife Fiz, refused to rule out the possibility that the ex-schoolteacher could defy the odds and return to live on the street one day.
She said: "Look at Tracy Barlow - she went to prison for murder, and a few years later here she is again. John's a bit like the Terminator - he could well be back."
Asked how Fiz would cope without John (Graeme Hawley), the actress replied: "She'll be mortified if she becomes a single mum. The last thing that Fiz wants is for Hope to be taken away from her, and she'll go to any lengths to protect her family. But Sam [Aston] reckons that Fiz and Chesney's mum Cilla might be back to help her out!"
Fiz makes some fresh discoveries about John in next week's episodes after he has another breakdown and pays a visit to Charlotte Hoyle's parents. When Fiz discovers John's whereabouts, he is forced to open up to her about the late bunny boiler's stalking and deranged behaviour.
