The actress was introduced to Weatherfield last month as Roy Cropper's (David Neilson) outspoken mother Sylvia, who has a strained relationship with the café owner.
Speaking on This Morning today, Cole confirmed that Roy and Sylvia's history will be further explored on screen in the coming weeks.
She explained: "Well, as you can imagine, Roy was a very difficult child and in fact we've just recorded the real background to what went on, which I'm not going to give away because it's quite deep and subtle."
Meanwhile, asked whether Sylvia knows about the background of Roy's transsexual wife Hayley (Julie Hesmondhalgh), Cole replied: "Not at the moment, but it does become clear. There are several glorious episodes, because it all kind of unravels very gradually and it is well worth a watch, I have to say. It's very witty and very moving as well."
Although Sylvia has been described as the soap's new battleaxe, Cole added that there could be more to the character than meets the eye.
"She's a tremendous battleaxe, but as is so often the case with battleaxes, it's actually a bit of a cover," she commented. "They don't like to show their feelings because they think if they do, they make themselves vulnerable and they might get more hurt.
"She's also actually incredibly witty, which I love! One of the things that I love about Corrie is that there's a lot of humour and a lot of wit in it."
Cole has previously appeared in Doc Martin, Tenko and Waiting for God.
