Frank Foster's parents have been cast in Coronation Street.

The couple will make their first appearance in the ITV1 soap on September 5 as their on-screen son celebrates his engagement to Carla Connor (Alison King).

Gwen Taylor - whose recent credits include a stage version of Calendar Girls and the rogueish Peggy Armstrong in Heartbeat - will play Anne Foster.

Meanwhile, Paul Clayton - who appeared in two episodes of Coronation Street as businessman Mal Quillan during 2005 - will portray her husband Johnny.

A Corrie spokesperson said: "Johnny and Anne are pretty full-on characters, like Frank. No sooner have they arrived than they're talking grandchildren which instantly freaks Carla out and tensions soon rise."

Frank (Andrew Lancel) and Carla will be involved in a dark new storyline on screen in forthcoming weeks. Work on the scenes apparently began last week ahead of anticipated transmission during September.
