Coronation Street bosses have decided that the soap's Christmas episodes should be full of comedy and warmth, according to a report.

Show chiefs have lined up humourous and heartwarming scenes to air over the festive period, the Daily Star claims.

It is thought that the programme's team want to provide a contrast to last year's Christmas editions, which took place in the aftermath of the devastating tram crash disaster.

Weatherfield veterans Rita Sullivan (Barbara Knox) and Emily Bishop (Eileen Derbyshire) will apparently go head-to-head in the culinary stakes after bickering over who would make the best Christmas dinner.

To settle the matter, they take part in a cook-off which is judged by their neighbours.

Meanwhile, the street's residents are expected to receive a shock on December 25 as they wake up to bald Christmas trees which have shed their pine needles early - as Gary Windass (Mikey North) has sold them dodgy stock.

The arrival of Katy Armstrong (Georgia May Foote) and Chesney Brown's (Sam Aston) baby boy is also expected to be one of the biggest events of the soap's festive season.

A Coronation Street source told the newspaper: "We want our fans to have a laugh over Christmas this year, not push them into depression."

More dramatic storylines in the build-up to Christmas are thought to include Sophie and Sian's wedding and new twists in the Peter, Leanne and Carla love triangle.
