Coronation Street star Michelle Collins has confessed that she would like to stay on the soap for a long time.

The actress joined the show as Stella Price last year, but received criticism for her Northern accent.

However, Coronation Street's win for best 'Serial Drama' at this year's National Television Awards has boosted Collins's confidence following the accent backlash.

"I've got bills to pay and a mortgage like everybody else. It was hard when I started. I was getting a lot of abuse and I struggled to cope with it," Collins told the Sunday Mirror.

"But I'm fine now. This award the show got tonight is a big 'fingers up' to the doubters and haters.

"I'm happy on the show and hope to stay for a long time."

Collins recently secured a new Coronation Street contract after impressing producers with her stint on the cobbles.
