Coronation Street on ITV1 featured a dramatic storyline involving Peter Barlow (Chris Gascoyne) and his estranged wife Leanne (Jane Danson).
The first of Friday's two instalments was seen by 7.58m viewers (36.1% audience share) at 7.30pm, with 144k watching later on ITV+1. 7.84m (33.4%) tuned in for the second episode at 8.30pm, with 218k watching on timeshift.
A number of scenes in the episodes were edited out of respect for the family of late Stone Roses fan Christopher Brahney.
Emmerdale's 6.05m viewers gave the channel a 30.6% audience share between 7pm and 7.30pm. 104k also watched the episode an hour later on timeshift.
Meanwhile, Case Sensitive thrilled 3.57m (15.3%) at 9pm, peaking with 3.87m (16.7%) in its first 15 minutes. The show also had a further 219k viewers on timeshift.
On BBC One, EastEnders pulled in 6.69m viewers (32.8%) at 8pm, as Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden) panicked following a revelation from Jay and Ben. The 10pm repeat on BBC Three was watched by 639k (3.3%).
New Tricks gripped 3.23m (15.0%) during the 9pm hour, peaking at 3.38 million (15.7%) during the last 15 minutes of the show.
Michael McIntyre's Comedy Roadshow amused 2.55m (16.8%) from 10.35pm.
On BBC Two, coverage of the First Night of the Proms live from the Royal Albert Hall was seen by 0.88m (3.7%).
Channel 4's highest-rated programme in primetime was The Million Pound Drop, with 1.63m (7.8%) watching between 9pm and 10pm. A further 181k watched on Channel 4 +1.
Hollyoaks was seen by 720k (4.2%) at 6.30pm, with a further 117k watching on timeshift.
The Angelos Epithemiou Show entertained 560k (3.4%) at 10.30pm.
Meanwhile, Shievonne Robinson's eviction from the Big Brother house was seen by 1.51m (7.1%) at 9pm, and her exit interview was seen by 1.12m (8.3%) at 11pm.
The Bachelor, featuring Spencer Matthews, wooed 774k (4.2%) in the 10pm hour.
ITV1 had the strongest primetime audience share of 19.9% between 7pm and 11pm, followed by BBC One on 17.4%. BBC Two followed on 5.2%, with Channel 4 on 5.0% and Channel 5 on 4.5%.
