'Coronation Street' secures Monday night ratings crown with 8.5m

Coronation Street comfortably topped the Monday night (July 16) ratings with an audience of nearly 8.5 million, overnight data reveals.

The Weatherfield serial pulled in 8.33m (38.8%) at 7.30pm (+1: 142k/0.6%), then Peter and Carla's exit attracted 7.74m (32.7%) at 8.30pm (+1: 238k/1%).

EastEnders logged 7.64m (33%) for an episode focused on Janine and Michael, appealing to a further 550k (2.7%) at 10pm for BBC Three's late-night catch-up.

Elsewhere, Emmerdale fetched 6.64m (33.1%) at 7pm, while Hollyoaks took 939k (5%) and 489k (2.4%) for E4's first look.

Neighbours drew 711k (8.7%) at 1.45pm and 1.05m (7%) at 5.30pm - overall a new three-month high for the show.

Home and Away followed Neighbours on Channel 5 at 6pm with 771k (4.3%), after which 5*'s first look grabbed 457k (2.4%).

Meanwhile, BBC One's latest daytime instalment of Doctors - titled 'Outlaws and Angels' - interested 1.62m (20%) - its best audience since April 25.
