It is claimed that Sophie is a passenger in Ryan's car when he takes the wheel under the influence of cocaine. After the accident, he flees the scene as emergency services arrive.

Sophie will reportedly be told by doctors that she might never walk again and may have to use a wheelchair for the rest of her life.

It has also been claimed that Ken Barlow (Bill Roache) will be seen breaking the news of Sophie's condition to shocked locals in the Rovers Return when the scenes air this autumn.

Ken apparently also tries to warn Tracy (Kate Ford) off her relationship with Ryan, telling her to "cast him away without a second thought".

Ryan has caused a stir on Coronation Street since returning to Weatherfield, setting fire to number 13 and lying to mother Michelle (Kym Marsh) as he seeks to fund his drug dependency.

Coronation Street airs on ITV1.
