Coronation Street actor Chris Fountain has spoken about the impact of character Owen Armstrong on rescuing his on-screen relationship.

Fountain's alter ego Tommy Duckworth is on the verge of leaving Weatherfield in tonight's second episode until Owen's intervention.

Tommy's planned departure comes about after his girlfriend Tina (Michelle Keegan) agrees to be a surrogate mother for Izzy and Gary.

Tommy sticks to his guns and does not want Tina to go ahead with the surrogacy. He offers her an ultimatum

"Owen tells Tommy he'll never find another girl as good as Tina and his words hit home," Fountain told What's on TV.

"Tommy does appreciate the sacrifice she's making, but it's a huge dent to his pride."

The actor further explains: "The whole situation is too much for him. Their lives are in such a mess that his girlfriend is having to have a baby for someone else.

"He's hurting a lot and thinks everyone would be better off if he left for good. He's at the bus stop with his bags packed when Owen finds him."
