The Weatherfield actor believes that viewers prefer the surprise heterosexual romance to Marcus's previous relationship with Sean Tully.
"The response I've had on Twitter has been great," the star told the Radio Times. "It seems that the public has been willing Marcus and Maria to get together.
"A lot of people seem to prefer Marcus and Maria together rather than Marcus and Sean, which is interesting and very unexpected."
Digital Spy readers were split on predicting a long future for the pair in a poll conducted on the day of their first kiss.
Despite being similarly unsure of where the romance may lead, Condou revealed that he hopes Marcus stays with Maria (Samia Ghadie).
"I don't know - I'm an old romantic, so I would like to think so," he added. "But, having said that, this is Coronation Street, so I am sure that the path of love never runs smoothly."
The 39-year-old confirmed, however, that fall-out from Aiden (Toby Sawyer), Jason (Ryan Thomas) and Sean's (Antony Cotton) discovery of the affair will last a long time.
"I think there are troublesome times ahead for all concerned," he said. "The whole situation is going to get a whole lot worse before it gets any better. There is a long way to go with this story."
