Former Coronation Street star Roy Barraclough has ruled out returning to the soap.

The 78-year-old actor is keen to continue acting but doesn't want to reprise his role as Rovers Return landlord Alec Gilroy in the soap.

"You can't go back and recreate it, because it was a special time on the Street," Barraclough told What's on TV.

"It was heavily focused on comedy back then and all that has changed.

"You could be a bit of a caricature if you went back now."

Barraclough made his debut in Coronation Street in 1972 and last appeared on the ITV show in 1998. He currently stars in BBC One drama Last Tango in Halifax. Get the Inside Soap magazine on your iPhone or iPad
