Behind the scenes at Corrie's crash
Published Friday, May 25 2007, 11:55 BST | By Kris Green
Digital Spy takes a behind-the-scenes look at the dramatic moment when Coronation Street's knicker factory boss, Paul Connor, is killed off in a high-speed car crash.
Sean Gallagher made the decision to quit Corrie in February after only five months with the programme to pursue "some new roles".
The untimely death of Paul Connor comes after wife Carla (Alison King) reveals that she knows about his call-girl antics. Paul begs for a second chance, but she is having none of it and throws him out.
In the hope of teaching Leanne Battersby (Jane Danson), the woman who rumbled his secret liaisons, a lesson, Paul lures her to a meeting in a hotel and demands she leave Weatherfield for good. The situation soon gets out of hand when Paul violently grabs her and throws her into the boot of his car.
While on the phone to his brother, Liam (Rob James-Collier), Paul loses control of the car and crashes into a skip lorry. With Liam and Janice (Vicky Entwhistle) hot on their tail, Janice is terrified for the safety of her step-daughter.
Involving more than 50 cast and crew and three fixed cameras - two in the car and one on a crane - the stunt could only be done once so there was no room for error.
Renowned stunt co-ordinator Richard Hammatt drove the skip lorry at 30 mph into the side of the £20k motor, leaving a crash-test dummy, complete with Paul Connor stubble, to feel the impact.
The 40-year-old actor then climbed carefully into the smashed up car and was ambushed by a team of make-up artists who applied fake blood and injuries.
The paramedics on set were actors, but there was a mixture of actual fire-fighters and extras that helped rescue Paul from the wreckage. Real life police and ambulance teams were also on standby to ensure the stunt went smoothly.
These spectacular scenes will air on Monday, June 4 at 7.30pm and 8.30pm on ITV1.
