'River City' actor joins Weatherfield
River City star Gray O'Brien started filming for Coronation Street yesterday.

The actor is believed to be taking a break from his role as Billy in the Scottish soap, after signing up to play Weatherfield's new heartthrob Tony Gordon, a catalogue rep who will seduce Carla Connor (Alison King).

Although River City producers are confident that Gray will be returning to the BBC show in 2008, Corrie sources have revealed that bosses are keen for him to become a permanent cast member.

"Gray asked for a break until Christmas and has said he will be coming back after then," a BBC spokesperson told the Daily Record. "He's very loyal to River City and he has made it clear he does want to come back."

A Corrie insider explained: "He's going to be one of the leading men in Corrie and although his contract is for six months, we're hoping he will stay involved."

O'Brien also seemed to hint that he would not be returning to River City, after filming his first Corrie scenes yesterday.

"I'm delighted to be joining the cast of Corrie. Tony is a great character and I hope I'll be well received by the viewers," he explained. "I've had a great time [on River City], but I'm looking forward to the new challenge." Get the Inside Soap magazine on your iPhone or iPad
